Dr. Anthony Clarke of Regent’s Park College, Oxford University, will present a lecture April 9 at William Carey University entitled, “The Point of a University: An Exploration of Formation, Community and Virtue.” The lecture begins at 5 p.m., in Fail-Asbury Hall at the corner of William Carey Parkway and Tuscan Avenue. The public is invited to attend; there is no admission charge.
Regent’s Park College was founded in 1810 and became a permanent part of Oxford University in England in 1957. The college admits both undergraduate and graduate students to earn Oxford degrees in arts, humanities and social science subjects.
Clarke is Senior Tutor in Pastoral Studies and Community Learning.
As senior tutor, Clarke oversees academic matters throughout Regent’s Park College. He works with churches in a wide geographical area, using the resources of the college to encourage learning and training in ministry. He also teaches early church and modern theology, Baptist history, preaching, Christian ministry and Greek language.
WCU made Dr. Clarke’s acquaintance during an annual trip to England for Carey Scholars.
“Regent’s Park College is the only Baptist College in Oxford University and archives William Carey artifacts and documents,” said WCU Provost Dr. Scott Hummel.
“Last year, the Carey Scholars delegation arrived on Sunday, when the college was closed. But a Carey alumnus, Dr. Gary Roberson, called Dr. Clarke and asked if he could receive the group and give them a tour of Regent’s Park. This year, Dr. Clarke also hosted the Carey Scholars. We’re honored to welcome him as a guest lecturer William Carey University.”
Dr. Roberson studied theology at Oxford University. He is a psychiatric physician and serves as medical director of Pine Grove Behavioral Health & Addiction Services of Hattiesburg.
“I studied undergraduate theology at Regent’s Park College and Dr. Clarke was one of my professors. I’m interested in theology. There’s a lot of commonality among psychiatry, theology and philosophy,” Roberson said.
“Psychiatrists tend to be philosophical, but usually don’t focus on theology. But patients often focus on theology and religion. Like many of us, it informs their worldview, so it’s useful to look at all three together. And Dr. Clarke is a wonderful speaker.”
While visiting the WCU campus, Dr. Clarke will also deliver a Christian Leadership Lecture during the university’s weekly chapel service. The public is invited to attend this lecture. It’s scheduled for April 10, at 9:15 a.m., at Thomas Fine Arts Center.
