The Light in the Piazza

  • Starts: Friday, October 18, 2019 7:00 PM

The Winters School of Music & Ministry Studies presents "The Light in the Piazza," a two-act musical that takes place in Florence, Italy, in 1953. The production is part of an annual series of fall musical and operatic productions.

Story of the play:
Margaret Johnson, an elegant and strong-willed Southern woman, has taken her daughter, Clara, on a vacation to Italy. When a gust of wind blows Clara’s hat right into the hands of a young Italian gentleman, neither age nor language nor familial disapproval can stop their whirlwind love affair. As Clara and Fabrizio fall into each others’ arms, Margaret must grapple with the question of whether to tell Fabrizio's family that Clara is developmentally disabled. With soaring operatic melodies that set it apart from most contemporary musical theatre, "The Light in the Piazza" is a story about mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and the deeply intertwined emotions of love and loss.

The roles of Margaret Johnson and her daughter, Clara, will be played by William Carey University music professor, Dr. Connie Roberts, and her daughter, Maggie Day Roberts. Auditions will be held for other roles in the cast of 20.
