The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Education program prepares doctorate-level practitioners in faculty roles to seek tenure track positions that require a PhD. The Doctor of Philosophy program is designed to prepare healthcare professionals as educators and healthcare researchers. Answer the call to care in both the healthcare field and the classroom, and earn a terminal degree that will allow you to share your expertise with tomorrow’s healthcare professionals.

Program Overview


Hours

The program can be completed in 24 months with a full-time plan of study or 36 months with a part-time plan of study.
*Longer plans of study can be created based on students needs (but must be completed within six years).


Delivery Method

This program utilizes a hybrid format. Most coursework is online, and there are two synchronous online weekend meetings and two in-person weekend meetings per year at the Hattiesburg, Mississippi campus.   It is convenient for the full-time working student.


Applicant Prerequisites & Requirements

To be admitted as a regular student, the applicant must:

  • Submit a completed application to the William Carey University graduate school
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Submit a 1-2 page scholarly narrative on a personal philosophy of healthcare education and goals
  • Submit a current curriculum vitae
  • Submit three recommendations: two from individuals who can attest to research and scholarship ability, and one personal reference. The reference form will be emailed to the references entered into the online application.
  • Submit a completed criminal background history attestation. The required criminal background check will be completed at orientation and must result in a clear record of specific violations.
  • Have earned a doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Have earned a GPA of ≥ 3.0 on all doctoral-level courses.
  • Be eligible to re-enter any previously attended college or university in good standing. If previously enrolled in a PhD program, the applicant must provide a letter of good standing from that program.
  • Provide a current copy of an unencumbered license, registry, or certification, with no pending legal or state board action. Unencumbered licensure must be maintained throughout enrollment in the program.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy involving proficiency in word processing, email correspondence, and the internet.
  • Demonstrate competency in scholarly writing prior to taking courses within the program through one of the following options:
    • Submission of a GRE Analytical Writing Score of ≥ 3.5 within the last five years
    • Passing HAE 799 - Academic Writing for Doctoral Students with a grade of B or better, or
    • Successful review of a writing submission

      * Email healthprofessions@wmcarey.edu for the guidelines pertaining to the writing submission.
  • Demonstrate basic competency in statistics as evidenced by one of the following options:
    • A grade of A or B in an undergraduate or graduate level statistics course within the past 10 years, or
    • Substantial experience in healthcare research projects prior to taking HAE 7XXX-Advanced Research and HAE 8000-Statistics.
