WCUCOM Student Health Insurance Requirements

In accordance with Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) standards, William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) requires all medical students to provide proof of health insurance coverage at the beginning of each academic year.

To support our students and provide access to affordable and reliable coverage, WCUCOM partners with CEJ Insurance Services to offer health, dental, and vision insurance options.

Annual Open Enrollment

WCUCOM’s Open Enrollment Period is held each July. WCUCOM utilizes an online benefits management system to make the enrollment and waiver process as convenient and efficient as possible.

Open Enrollment is an annual opportunity for students to:

• Enroll in available insurance benefits for the first time.
• Make changes to existing coverage.
• Submit documentation to waive WCUCOM’s student health insurance requirement, when eligible.

Health Insurance Requirement and Waiver Eligibility

To provide an affordable and comprehensive healthcare option, WCUCOM requires medical students to enroll in the UnitedHealthcare (UHC) student health insurance plan, unless they qualify for an approved waiver.

Waivers may be considered on a case-by-case basis for students who have qualifying coverage, including:

1. Parent or Spouse Group Health Insurance
   The student is covered under a parent’s or spouse’s employer-sponsored group health insurance plan.
2. TRICARE, Medicare, or Medicaid
   The student is enrolled in TRICARE, Medicare, or Medicaid. Medicaid eligibility is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
3. International Student Coverage
   An international medical student is enrolled in the GeoBlue international student health insurance plan.

Important Deadlines

Insurance enrollment and waiver deadlines are strictly enforced. Students who do not submit a qualifying waiver by the established Fall deadline will be charged the full cost of the WCUCOM student health insurance plan.

If an approved waiver is not submitted by the Fall deadline, the insurance charge will apply to both the Fall and Spring semesters.

Please note:

• Open Enrollment is not available during the Spring semester.
• Students may not receive coverage or have insurance charges removed after the Fall deadline unless they experience a qualifying life event that permits a change in coverage.
