Then & Now:
Carey Couples
Jimmy Harrington, ’70, a religious education major, and
June (Wainwright) Harrington, ’70, an elementary education
major, began dating in 1968 while students at Carey. Jimmy
pastored several churches before moving to Amory where he
is the associational missions director for Monroe County. June
taught elementary school before retiring in 2010. Pictured are
June and Jimmy in front of the “new” Wilkes Dining Hall in
1968 and at Callaway Gardens in 2012.
Gene Clinton Fant, ’59, and Ramona Faith Hankins (aka
Mona Faith), ’60, have many memories of their Carey Campus
“courtship days” which largely consisted of private walks,
activities at Carey, periodic barbeque meals at the Choctaw
Restaurant, and many dates in their home town of Laurel,
Miss. After their marriage in November 1959, Gene served
as pastor for 43 years in California, Mississippi, Virginia,
and New York, and presently serves as an interim pastor in
Tennessee. Mona enjoys a career as a song writer, performer,
and host/producer of her award winning radio show, Faith
for Living, and was recently inducted into the William Carey
University Alumni Hall of Fame.
John Wiederecht, ’69, arrived at Carey in September
1966, transferring from Tulane University. An out-of-town
student from New Orleans, John found there wasn't much to
do in Hattiesburg. He joined the Serampore Players during
the casting of Le Arc. There he met a tall brunette, Jane
Pierce from Oakman, Ala., who was doing costumes and
makeup, and eventually asked her out for a date. Over the
next couple of years, Jane and John continued to date after
Jane transferred to the University of Alabama. At that time,
a student at WCC was supposed to get permission to marry.
Without gaining permission, John and Jane were married in
February 1969. After their marriage was discovered, John was
called in for counseling by the Dean of Men, Davis Carney
Martin. Expecting a confrontation, he was surprised when the
dean congratulated him and wished them the best. Making
their home in Jasper, Ala., Jane is now retired after a long and
happy career as an elementary school teacher and John retired
as Chief Warrant Officer 4 after almost 40 years in the US
Army Reserve. He served during four major conflicts: Desert
Storm/Shield, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq. Jane devotes her time
to quilting and gardening, and John took a civilian position
working for the Army. They have one son, Pierce.
