School of Education continues
to lead the way as one
of Mississippi’s top education
programs. With program enrollment
soaring, the School of Education
works not only to meet goals,
but strives for excellence. The
teacher education program at
Carey is known for its caring and
experienced faculty, effective
coursework, field-based experiences
in diverse settings, and concern for
the student’s spiritual development.
The School of Education focuses on
developing educators who have high
moral standards that reflect integrity,
Christian values, and an attitude of
love and concern for all students,
regardless of status.
In addition to the current
undergraduate and graduate areas
of study offered in education, the
School of Education will begin a
Master of Education in Education
Leadership in fall 2012. This 36-
hour degree program is designed
for educators who desire to
become certified in educational
administration and supervision.
The program will prepare students
to become effective instructional
leaders and school managers in
elementary, middle, and secondary
education settings. There will be two
cohorts of 24 students each accepted
into the program for fall 2012, one
group at WCU-Tradition and one at

at Carey has recently been approved
by the Mississippi State Board of
Education under the new Blue
Ribbon Redesign for Teacher
Education. Every college and
university in the state of Mississippi
must meet certain criteria to receive
Blue Ribbon status. The goal of the
Blue Ribbon Redesign initiative is
to increase the quality and quantity
of Mississippi teachers, create an
accountability system to link student
achievement with teacher education
and alternate route programs,
increase teacher retention rates, and
develop a better linkage between
teacher education programs at
junior and community colleges and
Also, in 2012 the School of
Education earned the prestigious
accreditation from the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE), a national
accrediting body for schools,
colleges, and departments of
education authorized by the United
States Department of Education.
NCATE determines which schools,
colleges, and departments of
education meet rigorous national
standards in preparing teachers
and other school specialists for
the classroom. According to the
NCATE website, “When a school
of education is NCATE accredited,
it provides an assurance that the
school’s teacher preparation program
has met national standards set by
the teaching field at large and has
undergone rigorous external and
impartial review by professionals,
policymakers, and representatives
of the public. Graduates from
an NCATE accredited teacher
preparation program are in high
demand because they are well-
prepared for initial licensing and
advanced board certification.”
These are only a couple of the
many awards and distinctions for
which the School of Education has
come to be known. The Mississippi
Department of Education has
recognized the alternate route
program as the largest in the state
and the School of Education as the
fourth largest in the state and the
largest among private institutions.
In addition, the School of Education
has established the first Community
College Junior Experience program
in the state for elementary education
with Jones County Junior College.
The School of Education also
continues to engage the community
through outreach programs such
as the Young Authors Celebration
YAC). This year, Carey hosted nearly
students from eight schools for
the seventh annual YAC. Educators
who sign up to be a YAC teacher
hold a writer’s workshop in their
classrooms, where their students
learn about the drafting, editing,
and publishing stages of writing
and illustrating through hands-on
experience. The students then bring
their books to the YAC event at WCU
and share their work during the
breakout sessions. The students have
the opportunity to meet regional
authors and illustrators, participate
in a book fair, attend workshops on
writing and illustrating, meet WCU
student teachers, and share their
books with other students.
