In celebration of Carey 250, a group from
Carey, sponsored by the Baptist Student Union,
went on a mission trip to Serampore, India, where
Carey lived, ministered, and founded Serampore
College. Eleven students, two faculty members
and one alumna stayed in William Carey’s home
and participated in a number of events hosted by
Serampore College.
During the trip, they led worship in chapel daily
and at Serampore Johnnagar Baptist Church, which
William Carey founded. They also worked with
children in an after school program and helped
the college with some physical and maintenance
needs. Some Carey students attended classes, and
Dr. Brooke and Dr. Hummel taught classes. The
group spent one day in Calcutta.
This trip honored the legacy of William Carey
by ministering to this generation of Indians,” said
Dr. Hummel, vice president for advancement and
church relations, who led the trip with Dr. Jon
Brooke, assistant professor of history.  “It gave us
a greater appreciation for the work of William
Carey and the challenges and opportunities facing
