ississippi Governor Phil
Bryant delivered the keynote
address for the second
annual William Carey University
Endowed Scholarship Dinner
on August 21. Over $375,000
was raised for WCU scholarship
endowments for this event. “This
is the second very successful
scholarship dinner,” said Dr. Tommy
King. “It was such an honor to have
the Governor of Mississippi as our
special guest speaker. This is another
way that he has demonstrated his
strong support for education.”
A portion of the proceeds
from the dinner will be used to
establish the Governor Phil Bryant
Scholarship. From funds raised for
the 2011 dinner, the Senator Trent
Lott Scholarship was established.
During this year’s program, the Lott
scholarship was awarded to Carey
junior Brittany Barron, who attends
WCU-Tradition and is working
toward a degree in nursing.
The evening of the 2012
scholarship dinner was a celebration
of faith, family, and patriotism. After
Colonel Mark Prine ’95 led the
Pledge of Allegiance and Dr. Don
Odom ’78 led the national anthem,
Congressman Steven Palazzo offered
the invocation. Congressman
Palazzo, who represents the fourth
congressional district of Mississippi,
prayed for continued blessings
on Mississippi and William Carey
University, praying that we would
“expect great things from God and
attempt great things for God.”
