The School of Education offers K-12 supplemental endorsements in gifted education, mild/moderate disabilities, reading education, and health education. A supplementary endorsement may be earned by completing the prescribed coursework. These programs have been approved for licensure by the Mississippi Department of Education.
Gifted Education K-12
Attain an endorsement in Gifted Education in one year. A four-part endorsement series is designed for distinct groups of students:
- Instructors, seeking support as they teach in the gifted classroom (those under emergency certification);
- Regular classroom teachers desiring an add-on endorsement in gifted education;
- Class AA teachers desiring to gain an additional 12 hours of postgraduate work;
- Parents, guidance counselors, and teacher assistants needed groundwork in gifted education.
Curriculum
EDU 651 The Gifted Child. The study of the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual characteristics of the gifted child, including methods of identifying the gifted child. (3 hours)
EDU 652 Teaching the Gifted Child. A study of the programs, curricula, methodologies, media and materials for the education for the gifted child. (3 hours)
EDU 653 Curricular Development for the Gifted. This course focuses on the development of modules for advanced placement classes and writing/choosing appropriate curricula for elementary or secondary gifted children. (3 hours)
EDU 654 Trends in Gifted Education. Through research and discussion, the student develops an understanding of problems and current trends in gifted education. (3 hours)
The Center For Creative Scholars hosts an annual three day Summer STEAM in July for gifted learners grades 2-6 which serves as the setting for the EDU 652 practicum which provides hands-on experience in developing curricular models, identification procedures, and teaching gifted learners of all ages and learning levels.

Mild and Moderate Disabilities K-12
Attain an endorsement in mild and moderate disabilities with five graduate level courses. This series is designed for:
- Teachers of special students now serving under an emergency certification;
- Regular classroom teachers desiring an add-on endorsement in mild and moderate disabilities; and
- Teacher enrolled in a graduate program.
Curriculum
EDU 660 Organizational Procedures for Special Education. A study of the organization procedures of special education as required by the Mississippi State Department of Education and the legislative and court decisions associated with special education.
EDU 663 Learning Disabilities. This course is an overview of the field of learning disabilities including historical development, theoretical research bases, and social, emotional, physical, and learning characteristics.
EDU 664 Teaching Individuals with Learning Disabilities. This course addresses basic assessment procedures, selection, and utilization of instructional methods, materials, and individual programming for students with specific learning disabilities.
EDU 668 Intellectual Disabilities. This course is an overview of intellectual disabilities, including etiology and syndromes, theoretical research bases, and social, emotional, physical, and intellectual characteristics.
EDU 669 Teaching Individuals with Mild Intellectual Disabilities. This course addresses basic assessment procedures, selection and utilization of instructional methods and materials, and individualized programming for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities.
EDU 572 Survey of the Exceptional Child. A study of exceptionalities from the gifted to the profoundly disabled. Includes a multicultural component which explores the diverse ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of students and techniques for providing an effective relevant education.

Reading Education K-12
Attain an endorsement in Reading Education with six courses. A six-part endorsement series is designed for undergraduate elementary majors desiring an endorsement in Reading Education or teachers with a standard license desiring an add-on endorsement in Reading Education.

EDR 308 Early Literacy I (3 hours) A study of concepts, materials, and teaching strategies for oral language development and systematic early reading and writing instruction, specific to concepts about print, phonemic awareness, and phonics.
EDR 311 Early Literacy II (3 hours) A study of concepts, materials, and teaching strategies for oral language development and systematic early reading and writing instruction, specific to concepts about vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
EDR 344 Literature for Children (3 hours) A study of the classic and current literature for children in print and non-print media. The integration of literature into elementary school curriculum is emphasized.
EDR 407 Communication in the Elementary School (3 hours) Emphasis is placed on helping the elementary teacher develop skill in teaching oral and written communication. The use of an integrated approach with an emphasis on children's literature is stressed.
EDR 441 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Disability (3 hours) A study of the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities. Students diagnose and evaluate the skills of an individual child in a clinical setting and develop and carry out a plan of remediation based on the diagnosis.
EDR 474 Reading in the Middle and Secondary School (3 hours) The development of reading skills in the content areas is explored. Emphasis is on helping the middle and secondary school student read more effectively.

EDU 602 Trends in Children's Literature (3 hours) A survey of children's literature and current techniques for using literature in all areas of the curriculum.
EDU 611 Current Trends in Reading (3 hours) Current research related to the effective teaching of reading in the elementary school is explored.
EDU 615 Language Arts in the Elementary School (3 hours) The development of communication skills and concepts is explored through research and practical experiences.
EDU 636 Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum (3 hours) An introduction to specific principles and practices of integrating reading / writing across the curriculum with emphasis placed upon an awareness of balancing the process and the product, strategies for using the approach and assessment.
EDU 637 Advanced Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Disability (3 hours) This course provides specific knowledge in the assessment of the reading and writing abilities of elementary students. An emphasis is placed on the various causal factors which might inhibit the student's developmental processes of learning to read and write effectively and strategically, and an understanding of these factors might enable a teacher to develop and implement a program of prescriptive instruction.
Health Education K-12
Attain an endorsement in Health Education with four undergraduate level courses. A four-part endorsement series is designed for teachers with a standard license desiring an add-on endorsement in Health Education, and for undergraduate teacher education candidates desiring to add a supplemental endorsement area to their program.

PED 339 Methods of Teaching Health and Physical Education in Secondary Schools A study of principles of learning, principles of teaching, class organization, teaching techniques, and materials of secondary schools.
HEA 230 First Aid methods of caring for injuries and applying first aid to the injured, together with methods of preventing injuries and accidents.
HEA 300 Health and Exercise for the New Lifestyle This course is designed to teach the student how to be totally healthy, including information on healthy diets and types of exercise that are best for achieving and maintaining optimal strength.
HEA 323 Consumer Health A study of the effects of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs have on the body; drug abuse in today's society; the eating habits of today's young people; and family relationships.
