WCUCOM Professors Present at National Scientific Meeting
Hattiesburg, Miss., May 30, 2012 – Three professors from William Carey University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) attended the Experimental Biology 2012 (EB 2012) meeting sponsored by six scientific societies April 21-25 at the San Diego Convention Center. Dr. John Bailey, professor of physiology and anatomy, Dr. Johnny Porter, professor of physiology, and Dr. Jessica Taylor, assistant professor of physiology, joined 12,000 scientists from a variety of disciplines to participate in the symposia and abstract presentations.
EB 2012 offers lectures, workshops, oral and poster sessions, exhibits, and on-site career services in the fields of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, nutrition, and pharmacology. The majority of persons in attendance represent university and academic institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations and private corporations. The meeting is co-sponsored by the American Association of Anatomists, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Society for Investigative Pathology, American Society for Nutrition, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and the American Physiological Society, which the three WCUCOM professors hold membership to.
During the meeting, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Porter, and Dr. Taylor presented a poster from Physiology Understanding Week (PhUn Week) that detailed their activities during their visit to a fifth grade class at Oak Grove in November. The professors explained how they engaged students in hands-on physiology activities and discussed cardiovascular and exercise physiology during the workshop. They also showed how their activities directly tied into the purpose of PhUn Week, which is to increase student awareness of physiology in their lives and enhance student interest in physiology as a possible career.
