William Carey dedicates Thomas and Miriam Roberson Auditorium
William Carey University dedicated the newly renovated Thomas and Miriam Roberson Auditorium during a special Homecoming ceremony on Oct. 24 – 60 years to the day after its official opening.
The dedication came after a floor-to-ceiling renovation of the auditorium over the summer, made possible by a generous gift from William Carey alumnus and Alumni Hall of Fame member Dr. Gary Roberson.
The ceremony was a highlight of WCU’s Night of Worship, a music service that drew hundreds of university leaders, students, alumni, family members, and friends to watch as the facility was named in honor of Dr. Roberson’s parents, Thomas M. and Miriam E. Roberson.
"This dedication represents far more than an updated and rejuvenated facility," said WCU President Ben Burnett.
"Through Dr. Gary Roberson's transformational gift, students will gather in this space for worship, learning, and fellowship for decades to come. Naming the auditorium in honor of Thomas and Miriam Roberson ensures that their legacy of faith, generosity, and commitment to Christian education will inspire future generations."
Thomas Roberson, born in Meridian, and Miriam Roberson, born in Muskogee, Okla., were married on May 22, 1954.
Miriam was a registered nurse, while Thomas began his career with Pitney Bowes in Research and Development. Together, they built a successful wholesale business serving several states and a thriving real estate rental business.
More importantly, they invested in their community and instilled in their children the values of Christian faith, perseverance, service, and educational excellence.
The Robersons raised four children – Debra Roberson Murray, David Roberson, Paul Roberson, and Dr. Gary Roberson. They encouraged each to pursue higher education. Their commitment to Christian higher education was reflected in their decision to send all four children to Baptist colleges.
Dr. Gary Roberson, his brother David Roberson, and David's son, Seth Roberson, are all graduates of William Carey University. Dr. Roberson's distinguished career, service, and support for his alma mater earned him induction into the university’s Alumni Hall of Fame.
During the dedication, attendees reflected on the values Thomas and Miriam Roberson passed from one generation to the next. Through Dr. Roberson's generous support, the renovated auditorium now stands as a lasting tribute to his parents’ legacy.
The ceremony also brought together members of the Roberson family, including Dr. Gary and Kaoru Roberson, David and Kathy Roberson, Joe and Lisa Stevens, and Virginia Stevens, sister of Miriam Roberson – all present to honor the faith, generosity and service of Thomas and Miriam Roberson.
