Pharmacy students win professional development award
The ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum has chosen the WCU School of Pharmacy’s Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) to receive an Outstanding Professional Development Award for the 2022-23 academic year. ASHP stands for American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, whose membership is made up of practicing pharmacists.
This award honors exceptional professional development projects that SSHP conducts as a part of the ASHP-SSHP recognition program. The content, creativity, impact, and overall impression of the school projects are evaluated when reviewing submissions for the award.
Only 25 SSHP chapters nationwide were chosen for this honor. The WCU chapter’s professional development activities include:
- Conducting the annual clinical skills competition among student members;
- Attending annual state chapter meetings;
- Representing William Carey University and its SSHP chapter at Capitol Day in Jackson;
- Sponsoring a biannual “Drug Take Back Day” at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula and Ocean Springs; and
- Hosting an annual etiquette luncheon.

The event provides a safe way to collect unneeded prescriptions from the community; students and faculty collected eight full boxes.
