Forty-seven high school and community college students from Mississippi and Alabama gathered at William Carey University Nov. 12 to audition for the Winters School of Music.
“It was a record-breaker – a 300 percent increase in the number of auditioners over last fall. I think our first-ever ‘Audition Day & Indoor Picnic’ did well because our goal was for prospective students to see what we mean by Carey Family,” said Dr. Wes Dykes, dean of the Winters School of Music.
“It wasn’t just auditioning this time. It was also campus tours and tours of dorms. Students met with our admissions staff and asked questions. They got to sit in on rehearsals and enjoy a picnic lunch with friends, parents, and instructors from the music school. All of the activity pointed to one truth – Carey Music is family.”
About half of the students presented instrumental auditions for William Carey groups ranging from a jazz ensemble, to a marching band, to a full orchestra. The other half were interested in vocal groups that perform in a variety of styles. A few students did both instrumental and vocal auditions.
The Winters School offers a variety of degrees to prepare students for careers in music. Tailored to students’ interests, they include areas like performance, music education, worship technology, worship leadership, and music therapy.
