School of Education students receive scholarships
Mississippi Professional Educators awarded scholarships to five William Carey University graduate students in late April. The $1,000 scholarships will assist the students as they pursue graduate-level studies in education.
“As a member of Mississippi Professional Educators, I am extremely proud of the great work this organization does for education across our state. We are also very appreciative of their support of our graduate students as they continue their education to become better teachers and leaders for the children of Mississippi,” said Dr. Ben Burnett, WCU executive vice president.
Here’s a look at William Carey University’s scholarship recipients:
- Rhonda Locke is an assistant special education supervisor with the Lowndes County School District. A resident of Maben, Locke holds a bachelor’s degree in art education, a master’s degree in exceptional education, and a specialist degree in instructional leadership. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at WCU.
- Monica Mitchell is career and technical education director for the Cleveland School District. A resident of Cleveland, Mitchell holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education, a master’s degree in education in gifted studies, and a specialist degree in educational leadership and supervision. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in psychology at WCU.
- Sara Stygles is lead teacher at Oak Grove Middle School. A resident of Ellisville, Stygles holds bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at WCU.
- Traci Sullivan is assistant principal at West Marion Primary School. A resident of Foxworth, Sullivan holds bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at WCU.
- Marcoe Walker is a curriculum specialist with the Rankin County School District. A resident of Brandon, Walker holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She is currently pursuing a Mississippi supplemental certificate in administration at WCU.
Also in April, MPE presented a scholarship to an undergraduate student at WCU. Ashley Smith of Jackson received the 2021 Linda Anglin Teacher Preparation Scholarship. In addition to the $500 award, Smith will also receive a complimentary membership to MPE for her first year of teaching. A resident of Jackson, Smith is a Dean’s List Scholar and member of Alpha Chi Honor Society.
Founded in 1979, Mississippi Professional Educators is the largest organization for professional educators in the state, serving about 13,500 teachers, administrators and support personnel in both public and private institutions.
