April 27: School of Education Teacher Roundup
Aspiring teachers are invited to the William Carey University School of Education’s upcoming Teacher Education Roundup.
The event will be Tuesday, April 27, at Lorena Roseberry Smith Hall on WCU’s Hattiesburg campus. Registration begins at 5 p.m. The session starts at 6 p.m. Masking and social distancing will be observed.
The Teacher Roundup is open to high school and college students who want to become teachers, as well as assistant teachers who want to become certified to teach. People with college degrees in other fields who are interested in becoming teachers through William Carey’s alternate route program are also invited to attend.
“The William Carey University Teacher Education Roundup is an annual event. Attracting new teachers to the field of education is extremely important – now more than ever because of the teacher shortage,” said Dr. Teresa Poole, dean of the WCU School of Education.
Teacher vacancies for the 2021-22 school year for local school districts will be shared with attendees. WCU faculty members will answer questions about the university’s traditional bachelor’s degree program, as well as two non-traditional programs:
- Alternate route: In this program, WCU partners with school districts or individual students to provide scholarships and classes to help people who already have bachelor’s degrees earn teaching certificates and make a career transition into the classroom.
- Assistant teachers: Help is also available for assistant teachers who want to earn certification. WCU will provide a 50 percent tuition reduction for these online classes, enabling aspiring teachers to work on their own schedules.
