April 2: WCU hosts Teacher Education Roundup
Aspiring teachers are invited to the William Carey University School of Education’s upcoming Teacher Education Roundup.
The event will be April 2 at Lorena Roseberry Smith Hall on WCU’s Hattiesburg campus. Registration and snacks at 5:30 p.m. The session starts at 6:30 p.m.
It is open to high school and college students who want to become teachers, as well as assistant teachers who want to become certified to teach. People with college degrees in other fields who are interested in becoming teachers through William Carey’s alternate route program are also invited to attend.
“William Carey University hosts the Teacher Education Roundup every year. Attracting new teachers to the field of education is vitally important – now more than ever because of the teacher shortage,” said Dr. Ben Burnett, dean of the WCU School of Education.
Local school districts will send people to discuss employment opportunities in their areas. WCU faculty members will answer questions about the university’s traditional bachelor degree program, as well as two non-traditional programs:
- Alternate route: In this program, WCU partners with school districts to provide scholarships and classes to help people who already have bachelor’s degrees earn teaching certificates and make a career transition into the classroom.
- Assistant teachers: Help is also available for assistant teachers who want to earn certification. WCU will provide a 50 percent tuition reduction for these online classes, enabling aspiring teachers to work on their own schedules.
