William Carey University Theatre will open its children’s show Dec. 12 at Joe and Virginia Tatum Theatre. This year marks the 51st year WCU Theatre has presented a children’s play during the Christmas season.
“The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” is well-known to both children and parents.
Based on the book by Kate Dicamillo, the play tells the story of an expensive toy rabbit named Edward who learns a powerful lesson about love during a long and extraordinary journey. Edward is loved by a little girl named Abilene but, during an ocean cruise, Edward is accidently thrown overboard.
This is where his journey begins. He meets an older grieving couple; a hobo, his dog and other homeless people; a farmer; a sad little boy and his sick sister; and finally, a doll-mender.
The cast includes Delaney Dukes of Hattiesburg, Tessa Flesher of Mobile, Ala., Chace Giadrosich of Beaumont, and Shelby Sheffield of Picayune. Each actor will play multiple roles in the story.
The production is directed by Obra Quave, interim chair of the WCU Department of Theatre and Communication. Dewey Douglas, professor of theatre, is technical director. The scenic designer is Samantha Burkett of Picayune. Tessa Flesher is costume designer and lighting designer is Faith Webster of Ocean Springs. Sound designer is Brandon Dearmon of Hattiesburg, and the prop managers are Meagan Bihn of Gulfport and Delaney Dukes. The stage manager is Sierra McNairn of Ocean Springs.
Performances will be Dec. 12-13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5. Starting Dec. 9, the box office will be open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and one hour before each performance. Call (601) 318-6221 for reservations.
