  • Student Activities, Student Services

The Mississippi Secretary of State Candidate Forum was held Oct. 3 at William Carey University. The two candidates answered questions and talked about their positions:

  • Johnny Dupree, D-Hattiesburg, was mayor of Hattiesburg from 2001-17. Before then, he was a member of the Forrest County Board of Supervisors for 10 years.
  • Michael Watson, R-Pascagoula, represents District 51 in the Mississippi State Senate. An attorney, Watson was elected to the Senate in 2007.
The forum was hosted by WCU, Mississippi Coast Lawyers Chapter of The Federalist Society, and Gulf Coast Business Council.

If you weren’t able to attend the forum, but want to learn more about the candidates before the Nov. 5 general election, you can watch it on William Carey University’s YouTube channel.

Mississippi’s Office of the Secretary of State includes eight divisions overseeing a broad range of public policy and service: Regulation and Enforcement, Business Services, Education and Publications, Elections, Policy and Research, Public Lands, Securities, and Charities.

They are, from left, Jonathan Sircar of India; Amanda Seebalack of Trinidad & Tobago; Omar Villarreal of Pascagoula; Hannah McVeigh of Hattiesburg; and Alanna Wiest of Silverhill, Ala.
