The William Carey University Archery Team hosted the South-Central Region Collegiate 3D Championship Sept. 13-15 in Hattiesburg.
Traditional archery ranges feature flat targets set at exact distances. In contrast, 3D archery competition features natural, outdoor environments and gets its name from the three-dimensional animal targets that challenge competitors at each shooting station.
Five WCU archers earned trophies, from left:
- David Lara of Lucedale, 3rd Place, Men's Bowhunter
- Ava Rayborn of Baxterville, 3rd Place, Women's Bowhunter
- Dakota Platt of Jayess, 3rd Place, Women's Barebow
- Karley Mizell of Bogalusa, La., 2nd Place, Women's Compound
- Trey Davis of Oak Grove, 2nd Place, Men's Bowhunter
Head Coach Johnnie Stinson has been building the team for four years: "We're excited about the start of the new season. We've added five new archers to our team this year and two of those finished in third place in their respective classes, Dakota Platt and Ava Rayborn. We're looking forward to a good year."
The archery team is training now for the National Collegiate 3D Competition. It’s coming up Oct. 4-6 in Foley, Ala. This national competition will include about 375 archers from all over the United States.
