Amia Green and Brick Sager received the Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship Award, William Carey University’s highest honor.
William Carey University held its annual Honors Day Convocation April 24 in Thomas Fine Arts Center on the Hattiesburg campus.
Jenkins-Chastain Award:Amia Green and Brick Sager received the Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship Award. The Jenkins-Chastain Award was established in 1957 and is the university’s highest honor. Students nominated for this award exemplify outstanding citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and Christian service.
“The Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship Award is the highest award given to a student because it so closely matches the mission of the university,” said WCU Provost Dr. Scott Hummel. “This award is not focused on just one aspect of scholarship, leadership, or service, but all three. Both Brick Sager and Amia Green exhibit all of these qualities at the highest level. They are the epitome of the ideal Carey student. They are Carey Scholars and servant leaders.”
Green is a pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. She is a Carey Scholar, a member of Carey Connection and has served as a resident assistant during her time at Carey. She is a part of the Baptist Student Union, and is active in community service and with her church. Green has been accepted into the pre-med program at University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Sager is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business and cross-cultural business management. He is a Carey Scholar and has led several mission trips with the Baptist Student Union.
Student Leadership Award:
The Student life committee annually selects one senior student who has best demonstrated outstanding leadership during his/her enrollment at William Carey University. This year’s Student Leadership Award recipient is Ian Pittman.
Ian Pittman is the son of Alfred and Melinda Pittman of Columbia. He is an English and religion double major. He is president of Alpha Chi, Sigma Tau Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa, and serves as editor-in-chief of The Indigo. He has previously served as managing editor of The Cobbler and as president of the William Carey University Scholars.
Shoe Leather Award:Each year William Carey University presents the Shoe Leather Award to an individual who is involved with his alma mater and is very supportive of Carey events and helping the growth of William Carey. This year’s recipient is Dave Bush. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Carey University in 1978. Bush is a banking veteran of 40 years in Hattiesburg, with the last 25 years leading a banking division focused on private banking and wealth management. His civic/community involvement (past and present) includes:

- Former American Heart Association National Treasurer
- Former chair, Pine Belt Family Y
- Past chair, Forrest General Hospital Healthcare Foundation
- Former chair, Area Development Partnership Retirement Attraction Division
