HEADWAE honorees Janie Bower, left, and Priscila Renard
William Carey University’s Janie Bower and Priscila Renard were among the faculty and students honored Feb. 26 in Jackson at the annual HEADWAE awards luncheon, hosted by the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities.
HEADWAE stands for Higher Education Appreciation Day – Working for Academic Excellence. Each college and university in the state chooses two honorees, one student and one instructor, to receive HEADWAE awards and be recognized by legislators, educators and corporate sponsors who value excellence in education.
“We are very proud of our HEADWAE honorees. They exemplify the hard work and high standards to which our students and faculty aspire,” said WCU president Dr. Tommy King.
Here’s a look at WCU’s honorees:
- Student: Senior Priscila Renard of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a mathematics major and president of the Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society. She is also pursuing a minor in secondary education. Renard has worked as a translator and conducted research into autism. She has a 4.0 grade point average. Her career goal is to become a high school math teacher and continue her education toward a master’s degree
- Instructor: Originally from Ellisville, Janie Bower has worked at WCU for 19 years, teaching geometry, mathematics and field experience courses. She and her husband, Ted, are both alumni of WCU and support a wide variety of campus activities – including Homecoming, sports, music and theatre. She won the WCU Shoe Leather Award in 2015.
