World-famous pianist Philip Fortenberry will present a public concert during William Carey University’s 2019 Homecoming festivities. Fortenberry has performed at Carnegie Hall, the White House, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the United Nations’ 40th Anniversary.
Fortenberry has played 10 Broadway shows, won the inaugural Ghostlight Award as Best Musician on Broadway and was the hand-and-body double for Michael Douglas in the Emmy-winning HBO movie, “Behind the Candelabra.” He’s composed and released eight solo CDs and is a sought-after musical director and pianist for many performers. Fortenberry tours his solo concerts in the U.S. and China.
A native of Columbia, Fortenberry began playing piano at age 4, became the accompanist for his church at age 7 and performed his first solo concert at age 12.
After completing his undergraduate degree in 1980 at William Carey University, Fortenberry earned a master’s degree in classical piano performance from New Jersey City University. He was an adjunct faculty member in the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University and continued his private piano studies at The Julliard School.

“His accomplishments as pianist and musical director are remarkable, and we are so glad to claim him as one of our best.”

Those purchasing tickets to the alumni awards banquet may purchase concert tickets for only $10. WCU students will receive free admission with photo I.D. The proceeds from the concert will benefit the Steinway project and the Strings program at William Carey.
