Six William Carey University students were honored May 2 at the 2018 Theatre Awards Dinner. This annual event recognizes the contributions and talents of theatre majors and students of other majors who participate in theatre throughout the academic year.
Clare Kelly of Olive Branch and Nadia Trinanes of Hattiesburg were named Most Valuable Players. Decided by student vote, this award is the theatre’s most prestigious.
Kelly also received the R.E. Cromis Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a theatre major in memory of the husband of Mrs. Wilda Cromis of Pontiac, Mich., and she received an Acting Achievement Award for her work in “The God Committee” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”
Trinanes also received the Theatre Service and Appreciation Award, given to the theatre major who goes above and beyond in service to the theatre program, the Technical Achievement Award, and the Bob Crumpton Memorial Scholarship, established by Dr. Allison Chestnut in memory of a civic and denominational leader of Pensacola, Fla.
Taylor Abbott of Picayune received an Acting Achievement Award for his work in “The God Committee” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” This award is voted on by a secret panel of people outside the theatre who have attended every major production by WCU Theatre throughout the year.
Chace Giadrosich of Beaumont received the Shannon T. Robert Theatre Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2007 by WCU alumnus John Clearman in honor of Robert’s exemplary service to WCU and its students as a member of the theatre faculty. He also received the Mark Wilkinson Scholarship, which was funded by friends of the late Mark Wilkinson, a WCU theatre graduate.
Molly Jarvis of Apopka, Fla., received an Acting Achievement Award for her performance in “The Fantasticks.”
Shelby Sheffield of Picayune received the Norma Sullivan Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of a 1921 Mississippi Women’s College graduate and faithful patron of Carey music and theatre. He also received an Acting Achievement Award for his work in “The God Committee” and “The Fantasticks.”
