Hattiesburg campus hosts Honors Day Convocation

Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship Award recipients Lindsay Knight and Angelo Morales
William Carey University held its annual Honors Day Convocation on April 25 in the Thomas Fine Arts Center on the Hattiesburg campus.
Lindsay Knight and Angelo Morales were presented the Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship Award. The Jenkins-Chastain Award was established in 1957 and is the university’s highest honor. Students nominated for this award exemplify outstanding citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and Christian service.
Knight is a pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. A member of the Alpha Chi and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies, Knight’s on-campus leadership is extensive, including service in the Student Government Association, Pre-Student Osteopathic Medicine Association, Student Foundation and CareyWOW. Knight is a President’s List scholar and was a member of the homecoming court for three years, including Homecoming Queen in 2017. She works as a tutor in algebra, anatomy and physiology. At Venture Church, Knight is a greeter and event volunteer and has served as a youth retreat group leader and youth small group leader.
Knight received three nominations for the Jenkins-Chastain Award, including one from Barbara Hamilton, executive assistant to the president: “Lindsay always goes the second and third mile. She is totally dependable and relates kindly and well with all types on individuals. She is a Christian as is exhibited by her words and actions daily. She is a person of no pretense and seeks to serve and not be served.”
Morales is pursuing bachelor’s degrees in nursing and intercultural studies. A member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and Student Nurses Association, Morales also serves his Carey community in the Student Government Association and Carey Connection. He is a recipient of the Hub City Student Leadership Award. Morales is active in the Baptist Student Union and Venue Church and has taken mission trips to Lebanon, Honduras and East Asia.
Morales was nominated for the Jenkins-Chastain Award by Landon Adams, assistant director of the Baptist Student Union: “Angelo exemplifies Christian character in its highest form. He is consistently willing to uphold his Christian witness; he looks for ways to serve and leverages his sphere of influence for the gospel. His respect for his fellow students, staff and the faculty is evident in each encounter.”
Faculty Recognition
WCU President Tommy King presented Dr. Connie Roberts, professor of music, with the Winters Chair in Music.
King also presented Dr. Ben Dribus, chair of the math department, with the 2016-2017 Research Award. Dr. Elizabeth McClain, associate professor of medical education for the College of Osteopathic Medicine, was recognized as the recipient of the 2017-2018 Research Award.
