Dr. Benny Hornsby Gives WCU Christian Leadership Lecture
Dr. Benny Hornsby, instructor of sociology and chair of the social sciences department at the Hattiesburg campus of Pearl River Community College, was the guest speaker for William Carey University's Christian Leadership Lecture on Wednesday, March 7, in Smith Auditorium. A question and answer session was held following the lecture in the Lucile Parker Gallery for students interested in ministry, chaplaincy, history and counseling careers.
Dr. Hornsby was recently selected as "Humanities Teacher of the Year" for all PRCC campuses, and in addition to teaching at PRCC, serves as an adjunct instructor at WCU. In April, he will become president of the Mississippi Professional Educators, the largest teacher organization in the state. He holds degrees from eight institutions, including New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern Mississippi, New Mexico State University, and San Diego State University.
In addition to his strong background in education, Dr. Hornsby is also a retired captain in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps after 36 years of active duty. His shore duty stations included the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, aide to the chief of chaplains in Washington, D.C., and supervisor of the 500 chaplains on ships in the U.S. Pacific Fleet. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Combat Action Ribbon for service in Vietnam, and the Navy and Marine Corps Parachutist insignia. His latest book, A Navy Chaplain's Devotions for Afloat and Ashore, will be published in March by Cross Books.
He and his wife Dr. June Hornsby, professor of education at WCU, are parents of two adult children, both of whom are educators.
