The Winters School of Music at William Carey University hosted the District Five High School Choral Music Festival in Smith Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus on February 28. Seventeen choirs from seven high schools in the region that stretches from Hattiesburg to Meridian participated. The festival was headed by Dr. Mark Malone, professor of music, and Kathy Vail, associate professor of music.
Each group performed two choral selections for a panel of three adjudicators and sang sight-reading exercises for a judge for their performance assessment under the support of the Mississippi High School Activities Association. Concert adjudicators for the event included Dr. Connie Roberts, professor of music, Dr. Garry Packwood, director of choral music at Mississippi State University, and Jens Oliva, choral director at Brookhaven High School. Dr. Malone served as the sight-reading judge, and Suzanne Cain from Newton County High School in Decatur organized the event as district chairperson.
The WCU School of Music also hosted the District Five Middle School Choral Music Festival February 21, and will host the Private/Home School Music Festival April 10.
