Aspiring teachers are invited to apply to Mississippi Teacher Residency, a two-year program that combines college coursework and on-the-job training to prepare students for the teaching profession.

The application deadline is Feb. 5.

The MTR program is a collaboration among the Mississippi Department of Education, selected university and district partnerships and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, which funds the initiative. As one of three universities in the state chosen to pilot the new program, William Carey University is partnering with the Gulfport and Ocean Springs school districts.

WCU and its partners will host an interest meeting online on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. Here’s a link to the Zoom meeting:

Students chosen for the MTR program will complete an elementary education and special education degree program while working alongside experienced teacher mentors. They will also receive a full scholarship funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

MTR applicants must have an associate degree or at least 60 college credits from a degree program with a minimum 2.75 grade point average. Men and women of color, military veterans and junior college graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
