Remembering Emmett Till
Dave Tell, professor of Communication Studies at the University of Kansas, will give a lecture on Emmett Till's murder in the Mississippi Delta and its continuing effect as memorials dot the landscape, challenging the various memories and stories of a crime that sparked the Civil Rights Movement.
This public talk is in conjunction with Black History Month and co-sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University. The event is free and open to the public. Additionally, a limited number of free copies of Tell's Remembering Emmett Till will be available for attendees.
Professor Tell’s research focuses on issues of race, memory, and place. Since 2014, he has focused on the legacy of the murder of Emmett Till in the Mississippi Delta. As a long-time partner with the Emmett Till Memorial Commission of Tallahatchie County, Tell’s work has a strong public focus. His scholarship is written for broad, public audiences and he has worked extensively with the ETMC to develop resources (mobile apps, roadside markers) with which to tell the story of Till’s murder for the next generation.
