Teachers with less than five years’ experience are invited to a New Teachers Symposium Saturday, Jan. 12, at Highland Bluff Elementary School in Brandon. The symposium runs from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
The event is hosted by the Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools (PREPS), Mississippi Professional Educators (MPE), and William Carey University, with a grant from the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability and Reform. It is free to MPE members or teachers in PREPS member districts.
The keynote speakers are Whitney Drewrey, 2018 Mississippi Teacher of the Year, and Donna Porter, a nationally known expert on classroom management.
The day will feature breakout sessions led by educators and stakeholders from across the state who will offer new teachers practical guidance about behavior and classroom management, professionalism, and instructional strategies – as well as helpful hints and words of wisdom.
“New teachers face a challenge at the start of their careers – how to translate a degree in education into practical, day-to-day strategies that help each student learn. Hearing from classroom veterans makes a difference,” said Patti Permenter, PREPS associate director.
To register, visit www.mspreps.org or www.mpe.org. MPE will provide a complimentary lunch and Continuing Education Units will available through William Carey University.
