High School Dual Credit

William Carey University offers a cooperative program in area high schools whereby specific courses may be offered for college credit in addition to high school credit. Approval of courses for college credit is based on criteria including teacher qualifications, curriculum, and instructional methods. Admission as a dual credit student is only available to qualifying students at cooperating high schools.

  • Attendance at a participating high school
  • Student must be classified as a junior (11th grade) or senior (12th grade) student.
  • Student must have a minimum ACT score of 20 or SAT score of 950 
    • Some classes will require a minimum subscore in Mathematics. Students wanting to take College Algebra (MAT 131) or Trigonometry (MAT 132) must have ACT subscores of 20 or higher; Pre-Calculus (MAT 150) must have ACT subscores of 25 or higher; Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (MAT 171) must have ACT sub scores of 26.
  • A high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores must accompany your registration form.
  • Must receive approval from high school counselor or administrator

The tuition rate is $50.00 per credit hour

  • 3-hour course = $150.00; 4-hour course = $200.00

*Most dual credit courses are worth 3 credit hours.  Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses as well as MAT 171: Calculus with Analytic Geometry I are worth 4 credit hours.

**EDU 200 & EDU 225 are part of Educator Preparation.  Credits earned for these three courses are accepted at select institutions: Alcorn State University, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, and William Carey University.

If a high school would like to offer classes that are not listed above, then the Office of High School Dual Credit is willing to consider any requests.

Eligibility

  • Awarded a Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of 18 Graduate-level credit hours in the subject area of interest.

Required Credentials

William Carey University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). As such, William Carey University must document for SACSCOC that all instructors meet the following teacher qualification standards. Once the instructor is selected by the participating high school, William Carey University will need the following to review for approval:

  • A completed adjunct application
  • A current resume' or curriculum vitae showing teaching experience
  • Official transcripts from each institution attended showing degree(s) awarded
  • Syllabus for the first course to be offered as dual credit

Upon receiving the above-listed documents, they will be submitted for formal review and approval to teach dual credit courses.

  • Note: Teachers must be officially approved prior to the first day of the semester in which the proposed dual credit course(s) will be taught.  No dual credit courses may be offered without the teacher being officially approved and notified beforehand.
