Tae Young Hong is an Instructor of Music at William Carey University where he teaches music theory and serves as staff collaborative pianist. Originally from South Korea. He holds a Masters degree with dual emphasis in Music Theory/Composition and Piano Accompanying from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from William Carey University. Prior to his post at WCU, he taught music theory, aural skills, and group piano classes at USM. He is a published composer of chamber and choral music and also plays multiple instruments including piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, upright bass and drums.
As a researcher, Hong’s interests include the music of Shostakovich and Ravel as well as the impact of 5G internet on online music education. He presented his research at a number of conferences including South Central Society for Music Theory, and USM Graduate Symposium.
As a collaborative pianist, he has accompanied a large number of voice, instrumental, and chamber music recitals as well as numerous musical theater productions. He has also served as the Music Director for Carey Dinner Theater for several years. Some of the recent productions he has been involved with include Light in the Piazza, All Night Strut, Thoroughly Modern Millie, South Pacific, Of Thee I Sing, Peace Like a River, Radio Gals, Schoolhouse Rock, 8 Track, Spitfire Grill, Spring Awakening, among others.
His musical pursuit covers a wide array of genres. He writes/produces classical chamber music, electronic music for contemporary dance, progressive rock, jazz fusion, and anything in between. He also loves collaborating with other musicians and artists, and arranges, records, and produces as a freelancer in his home studio. On Sundays, he serves as the Music Outreach Director at Franklin United Methodist in Laurel, MS, where he leads the worship service at the piano.
