Dr. Joseph Bird is an alumnus of William Carey University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Religion. After graduating from Carey, Dr. Bird attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he received Master of Divinity, Master of the Theology, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Dr. Bird began teaching as an adjunct instructor at Carey in 2017, joined the fulltime faculty in March 2021, and became Chair of the Christian Studies department in May 2021. Dr. Bird’s research interests are the areas of homiletics, practical theology, and ecumenism. Prior to joining the faculty, he served for five years as the pastor of First Baptist Church Collins in Collins, Mississippi. Dr. Bird was the President of the Board of Ministerial Education for two terms and the Education Director for the Covington/Jefferson Davis Baptist Association for three years. As an active member of his community, Dr. Bird served as an editor for Southern Pine Electric’s Making Life Better: Southern Pine Electric’s 80 Year History and has served as a member of the advisory board and nominating committee for Southern Pine Electric since 2016. Dr. Bird has been married to his wife, Jennie, for over 10 years and enjoys spending time with his two children, Addison and Isaac, exploring the outdoors.
