Pianist Brian Murphy joined the music faculty at William Carey University’s Winters School of Music and Ministry Studies in January 2015. He currently teaches applied piano, class piano, other piano-related courses, and music history. He is also active as a collaborative pianist and vocal coach. Prior to his post at WCU, Murphy worked as a collaborative pianist on staff at Mercer University, Georgia College and State University, and Wesleyan College.
Murphy has performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist across the southeastern United States, Mexico, Chile, and Germany. He currently teaches on faculty as Coordinator of Collaborative Pianists at the International Performing Arts Institute in Kiefersfelden, Germany, a three-week summer music program for singers and collaborative pianists. Brian Murphy performs with his father, Slater Murphy, organist, as a recently-launched father-son duo entitled “Murphy Mixture.” Murphy continues to remain active as a soloist, collaborator, and church musician.
Dr. Murphy holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi, a double Master of Music in Collaborative Piano and Choral Conducting with a concentration Church Music from Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Mississippi College. Past teachers include Elizabeth Moak, Carol Goff, Elizabeth Pridgen, and Angela Willoughby. He has coached with pianists John Wustman and Anton Nel, violinist Robert McDuffie, and members of the Emerson String Quartet. Murphy lives in Hattiesburg with his wife, LeAnn, who teaches at Petal Elementary School. They have one son, Patrick. When away from the office, the Murphys love to hike and snow ski.
