Grandfather Ellis at the gates of Ellis & Sons, George Street, Riddings.

George Ellis did his printing apprenticeship in Alfreton, and was known as a skilled and hard working printer. His wife was the local reporter for the Derbyshire Times (in Chesterfield) and Bernard Ellis trained as reporter for the same newspaper.

The entrance was also the entrance to his house (a semi-detached at the southern end of George Street, on the eastern side). The printing works was at the bottom of the yard.

Riddings is close to the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border and Jacksdale (at the bottom of Riddings Hill), Nottinghamshire, was where Freda Ellis (nee Porter) was born and grew up. This area (just north of Eastwood) is often referred to as D. H. Lawrence country as many of his books were set in the area.
