On Wednesday, May 30, 1792, William Carey delivered a groundbreaking sermon based on Isaiah 54:2-3.  The people gathered at Friar Lane Baptist Church in Nottingham for the meeting of the Northamptonshire Baptist Association heard it first.  One generation of God’s people after another, however, has heard it as well.  In his sermon, Carey challenged Baptists with two exhortations to devote themselves to missionary outreach to people around the world:

“Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God.”

Hear again the Bible text for his sermon, and be reminded again of the exhortations that have echoed across the centuries to challenge us today.

Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;

For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited (Isaiah 53:2-3, KJV).
