he 2011-12 William Carey
University athletic season is in
full swing. WCU men’s soccer,
ranked no. 7 in the NAIA, is 13-1-
2 on the season and 8-0-2 in SSAC
play while women’s soccer is 7-7-2
and 5-4-2 in SSAC action.  Both
teams opened the Southern States
Athletic Conference playoffs on
November 5.
WCU men’s cross country has
made tremendous strides this
season with strong performances
from returner Channing Stringer,
and newcomers Patrick Truett and
Manuel Grandos. Women’s cross
country continues to improve, with
Kayla Byrd and Yaila Zotzmann
leading the pack. The SSAC
Men & Women’s Cross Country
Championship took place on
November 5 at Choctaw Trails in
Clinton, MS.
Carey men and women’s golf
teams have competed in two
tournaments to begin the 2011-12
year. Women’s golf finished third in
the Badger Fall Invitational and sixth
in the Commercial Bank & Trust
Fall Classic. Newcomer Summer
Struzinski has made an immediate
impact for the Lady Crusaders,
earning All-Tournament Honors in
the Badger Fall Invitational. Carey
men’s golf is off to a solid start to
the 2011-12 season. Reigning SSAC
Newcomer of the Year Nic Ishee has
been brilliant for the Crusaders to
start the season with a 74.1 scoring
average. The Carey men wrap up
the fall portion of the schedule in
the UM Fall Classic on October 31
through November 1.
Men and women’s basketball
both opened the season on
November 4, 2011. The Lady
Crusaders open the season in
Georgetown, Ky., in the Habitat
Classic. The Crusaders will take on
future SSAC member Coastal College
of Georgia in the Q Kelly Classic in
Mt. Vernon, Ga.  WCU basketball
has their first home game at Clinton
Gym on November 22, 2011,
against Blue Mountain College. The
women’s game is scheduled to tip off
at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game to
follow at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to their busy fall
competition and practice schedules,
WCU athletes have been hard at
work off the field. For the third
straight year, Carey athletes have
participated in the American Heart
Association Heart Walk held at the
University of Southern Mississippi.
Over 150 athletes raised more than
$2,000 to donate to the cause.
Carey athletes also took part in the
Gordan’s Creek Cleanup sponsored
by the Mississippi Department of
Environmental Quality and the City
of Hattiesburg.
Fellowship of
Christian Athletes
Chapter Reinstituted
William Carey University is
proud to announce the inception
of the Hattiesburg campus
chapter of Fellowship of Christian
Athletes (FCA). FCA is the largest
Christian sports organization in
America. FCA focuses on serving
local communities by equipping,
empowering and encouraging
people to make a difference for
Christ. William Carey FCA members
have been part of several projects,
including branding the William
Carey FCA chapter, visiting rehab
patients at Forrest General Hospital,
and holding their first ever Hoops
Rally on campus in partnership with
the FCA Area Coordinator Mitch
Williams. Several speakers from
around the Pine Belt community,
including WCU alumni and local
community leaders, have come to
weekly meetings to lead worship
and fellowship.  All students, student
athletes, and alumni are encouraged
