Dr. Scott Hummel
Named Executive Vice
President and Provost
Dr. Scott Hummel
has been appointed
executive vice president
and provost at William
Carey University.
He has served as the
vice president for
advancement and church
relations, professor of
religion, and director
of the Carey Scholars
program since 2008. Dr.
Hummel helped build
the honors program and
leads the Carey Scholars
to England every other
year. He traveled to
China to help establish
WCU’s exchange
relationship with Linyi University and has led mission
trips with Carey students to India and Peru.
Dr. Hummel earned the Bachelor of Arts in biblical
studies from Carey and received both the Greek and
Hebrew awards and the Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship
Award. The Petal Rotary Club sponsored Hummel as a
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, which allowed him to
study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1988-
1989. In 1991, he received the Master of Divinity in
biblical languages, and in 1996 he received the Doctor
of Philosophy in biblical backgrounds and archaeology
from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort
Worth, Texas.
Before coming to Carey, Dr. Hummel served as
associate professor of biblical studies and chair of the
department of biblical studies and Christian ministries
for 10 years at Le Tourneau University in Longview,
Texas.
Dr. Hummel is the president-elect of the Rotary Club
of Hattiesburg, and serves on the boards of R3SM and
the United Way of Southeast Mississippi. He is currently
the interim pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in
Wayne County. Dr. Hummel has been married to Starr
for 22 years and they have three daughters: Lauren, a
student at Carey, Rachel, and Julia.
chapel will seat approximately 100 people and should open
by early 2014. A campaign is underway to fund the chapel
project, and naming opportunities are available.
The fourth project will be a new school of business
building located on Tuscan Avenue. The 21,000-square-foot
facility will be 2,000 feet larger than the current building and
will feature needed technology upgrades. It is scheduled for
occupancy in fall 2014.
