Wins Awards
The William Carey University
chapter of Delta Omicron recently
traveled to Lexington, Ky., for the
fraternity’s triennial conference. The
chapter, Omicron Sigma, received
first place in scrapbooks as well as
the Award of Excellence and the
Award of Efficiency, which are the
highest awards a chapter can receive.
Kathy Vail, associate professor of
music at WCU and the chapter’s
advisor, served as an accompanist for
the conference and was also elected
to the fraternity’s National Board as
national music advisor for 2012-
2013.
Founded in 1909, Delta Omicron
International Music Fraternity is a
professional fraternity established
to foster fellowship through music
and promote American music and
musicians. Additionally, the fraternity
promotes character and leadership
development and provides aid to
worthy students. The Omicron Sigma
chapter was installed at Carey on
October 24, 1964.
Chelsey Maywalt of Carriere,
who is currently working on her
Master of Business Administration
at William Carey University, was
recently named recipient of the
Dr. Richard Scott 2012 Sigma
Beta Delta Fellowship. One of 11
students chosen for this national
honor, she will receive a grant to
be used for her studies during the
2012-2013 school year.
The Sigma Beta Delta
International Honor Society
for Business, Management,
and Marketing promotes
higher scholarship in business
education and rewards scholastic
achievement in business subjects.
Students must rank in the upper
20 percent of their class to be
considered for invitation to the
society.
Maywalt, who graduated from
Carey in May with a major in
business administration and a
minor in management/marketing,
currently works as a graduate
assistant in the WCU alumni
office. Named Miss William Carey
University 2012, Maywalt was also
Student Government Association
president, a member of Carey
Connection, a member of Alpha
Chi National College Honor
Society, and Who’s Who Among
Students in American Universities
and Colleges. She received the
Alumni Association School Spirit
Award during the 2012 Honors
Day Convocation.
