Dr. Janet Williams, dean of the school of nursing, was
recently elected by her peers to serve as vice chair for
the Mississippi Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) Deans
and Directors committee for the schools of nursing
throughout the state. Following her year as vice chair,
she will become chair for the committee.
“This is truly an honor for Dr. Williams,” said Jerry
Bracey, administrative dean of WCU’s Tradition campus.
“She has been chosen for this leadership position based
on her continued professional involvement, her success
as a leader, and her potential to continue leading in an
outstanding manner.”
Having served in the school of nursing for over 20
years, Dr. Williams was given the 2011 Woman of
Achievement Award in the education category by the
Lighthouse Business and Professional Women (BPW)
organization. Lighthouse BPW represents successful
women in every sector of the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s
business community.
“Dr. Williams is truly an outstanding leader and
role model for all of us,” Bracey said. “She continues
to represent William Carey University in an exemplary
manner.”

Jennifer DeMelo, a senior biology major from
Kenner, La., was crowned Miss William Carey
University 2013 at the Miss WCU Scholarship
Pageant on October 19. The daughter of Stewart
DeMelo and Nancy Hood Green, Jennifer is a dental
hygienist and a sergeant in the United States Army.
She will represent Carey at the Miss Mississippi
Pageant, which will be held in Vicksburg, July 10-13,
2013.
Jennifer was crowned by Miss William Carey
University 2012, Kenna Spiller, the daughter of Jay
and Carolyn Spiller from Petal and a sophomore
elementary education major. Kenna is a Carey
Scholar, plays flute in the WCU orchestra, a member
of Carey Company, and works as an after-school
counselor at the Petal Family YMCA. She represented
Carey this past summer at the Miss Mississippi
Pageant and was a Quality of Life Finalist and winner
of the Lambiotte Choreography Award.
