William Carey University Library Announces Cataloguing of Hymnology Collection
The William Carey University Library recently announced that the Frances Winters Hymnology Collection has been cataloged and is available for scholarly research at the Hattiesburg campus.
The collection contains 54 items, including sheet music and hymnals dating back to the 1800s, and has been gathered through donations from private sources.
"The collection will provide for scholarly research for professional church musicians and hymnologists," said Dr. Don Odom, dean of the Winters School of Music and Ministry.
"Scholars in the field will be able to search the collection for research on a variety of topics."
Frances Winters collected hymnological materials and taught hymnology and other church music courses at Carey and also at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Her relationship with prominent hymnologists is reflected in her correspondence, some of which is also housed in Carey's archives, said Odom.
"Of particular interest in Baptist heritage life is that Frances Winters taught the foremost writers and educators of hymnology," said Odom. "She helped define the discipline of hymnological studies."
The catalog of the collection can be found online
here. The collection, which is non-circulating, is available by request at the circulation desk of the Smith/Rouse Library.
