WCU Softball Adds Four More for 2009

Hattiesburg, MS, May 22, 2008 - William Carey University Softball Head Coach Wendy Hogue has announced the signings of Kelsey Jo Smith, Judy Barber, Emily Cobia, and Amber Brown for 2008-09 season.

Kelsey Jo Smith is a left-handed pitcher from Baton Rouge, LA.  She is a recent graduate of Parkview Baptist High School where she once again led her team to the state finals.  In her years at Parkview, Kelsey has been chosen first team all district, all Metro, and all state.  This past year she was chosen to participate in the LA State All-Star Game and was named the All-Star MVP for her performances in the circle as well as at the plate.

“We are very excited to have finally received a commitment from Kelsey Jo.  The addition of a quality lefty on our pitching staff is something we’ve been wanting for years.  Kelsey is a true athlete that not only pitches well, but also swings a good bat.  She led her team in hitting this year with a .531 average.  I’m looking for great things from her for the next four years.”

While at Parkview, Kelsey also excelled in basketball and volleyball.  Kelsey is the daughter of Joey and Pauline Smith of Baton Rouge, LA.

Judy Barber has recently committed to WCU as well.  JB is a catcher/3rd baseman from Petal, MS.  After prepping at Petal High School, Judy signed with Pearl River Community College and had a fantastic freshman year hitting over .500 with 9 homeruns for the Lady Wildcats.

“JB is a phenomenal player; No doubt the toughest I’ve ever seen.  She can hit it a ton and is an excellent defensive player that will be able to fill many roles for us. I definitely see her making an immediate impact on our team next year!”

Judy is the daughter of Glenn and Marilyn Barber of Petal.

Emily Cobia of Sumrall High School and Amber Brown of Centreville Academy have also signed letters of intent to play for Carey.  “Emily is not only an athlete, but a great person and student as well.  Amber is a quick, hard working middle infielder with a great attitude.  I look forward to the addition of Emily and Amber to Carey Softball.”

Emily is the daughter of Kevin and Linda Cobia of Sumrall.  Amber is the daughter of John and Carla Brown of Gloster, MS.
