Carey Splits on Day Two of Tournament
DECATUR, AL, May 20, 2008 - #11 William Carey University concluded play in Pool B falling to #6 St. Gregory’s 2-0 and defeating Dana College 2-1.
In game one against St. Gregory’s, a disastrous error by the Lady Crusader’s with two outs in the third allowed the Lady Cavaliers to plate two runs and take a 2-0 lead. That was all the support Lady Cavalier starter Sharon Bell needed as she continued her dominate form throwing six no hit innings to pick up the win. Bell has been virtually unhittable in the NAIA Tournament allowing only three hits and recording fifty strikeouts in four starts in the tournament.
Jeana Erickson did manage a hit for the Lady Crusaders off reliever Kaylen Woosley in the seventh. Devin King (10-6) was stellar on the hill for the Lady Crusaders allowing only four hits on the day.
In game two the Lady Crusaders feasted on Dana College pitching
pounding out nine hits on the game. Jeana Erickson drove in both Lady Crusader run with RBI singles in the first and third innings. William Carey starter Brittany Ladner (15-4) allowed a run in the top of the first and then calmly shut down the Lady Vikings the rest of the way. Carey reliever Brittany Fuller worked a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.
William Carey concludes their first NAIA National Tournament experience with a 2-2 record in pool play. Point Loma Nazarene and St. Gregory’s will move forward out of Pool B.
The Lady Crusaders finish their historic 2008 season with a 40-14 record. The 40 wins massed by the Lady Crusaders is a school record.
