William Carey Knocks Off Warner Southern, 5-2
DECATUR, AL, May 20, 2008 - Shelly Berry and Jeana Erickson homered and Brittany Ladner was rock solid on the hill as # 11 William Carey picked up their first win in the 2008 NAIA National Tournament by knocking off #16 Warner Southern, 5-2
As with game one, the Carey bats remained quiet but began to show some signs of life. In the second inning Shelly Berry smacked a solo home run to stake the Lady Crusaders to a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Crusaders carried that lead into the sixth inning and with the bases loaded and one out, Pam Martin’s sacrifice fly scored Leah Kilpatrick from third to put Carey up 2-0 and give the Lady Crusaders some breathing room. Then Jeana Erickson stepped to the plate and gave the Lady Crusaders all kinds of comfort as she belted a 3 run home run to put William Carey up 5-0.
The Lady Royals rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh but starter Brittany Ladner worked out of the jam to pick up the win.
William Carey returns to action tomorrow as they take on St. Gregory’s (OK) at 2:30 and Dana (NE) at 7:30.
