William Carey University Announces New Vice President for Advancement
Hattiesburg, MS, August 05, 2008 - Dr. Scott Hummel of Longview, Tex. is the new vice president for advancement and church relations and professor of religion at William Carey University. He comes to Carey from LeTourneau University in Longview where he served as an associate professor of biblical studies and chair of the department of biblical studies and Christian ministries for ten years.
Hummel is returning to his alma mater where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in biblical studies in 1987. While at Carey he received both the Greek and Hebrew awards and was honored with the highest recognition given by the university, the Jenkins-Chastain Citizenship Award.
A Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar sponsored by the Petal Rotary Club, Hummel studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1988 through 1989. He earned both the master of divinity with biblical languages and a doctor of philosophy in biblical backgrounds and archaeology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Forth Worth, Tex.
Hummel’s early experience includes serving as a chaplain and dorm parent with wife Starr at the Edna Gladney Center, an adoption agency in Fort Worth. At LeTourneau University, Hummel developed and taught Physical Settings of the Bible in several countries, including Israel, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Italy. He served as the president of the Teaching Faculty Organization from 2002 – 2004.
He has presented papers at academic conferences and published numerous articles in the “Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible” and in the “Biblical Illustrator.” He is currently writing over twenty articles for the “Baker Illustrated Bible Dictionary.”
Recipient of the Robert Selby Teaching Scholar Award from LeTourneau University, Hummel also dedicates himself to community service organizations. In Texas, Hummel was president of the Longview Greggton Rotary Club, served on the Longview Rodeo Board, and was a member of the Cultural Activities Commission. A volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels, Hummel is an active church member.
He is married to wife Starr and together they have three daughters: Lauren, Rachel, and Julia.
