William Carey University’s professor of mathematics and education Dr. Charlotte McShea and mathematics major Amanda Monk of Perkinston are among 68 outstanding faculty and students from 34 Mississippi public and private universities and colleges to receive special recognition from the Mississippi Legislature during the Higher Education Appreciation Day – Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) program. HEADWAE was established in 1988 by the Mississippi Legislature to recognize outstanding students and faculty in Mississippi’s colleges and universities.

Twenty-six William Carey University students from the Hattiesburg campus were named Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. This is one of the most prestigious awards in the academic community, and has become one of the most highly regarded and long-standing honors programs in the nation.

The Winters School of Music at William Carey University hosted the District Five High School Choral Music Festival in Smith Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus on February 28. Seventeen choirs from seven high schools in the region that stretches from Hattiesburg to Meridian participated. The festival was headed by Dr. Mark Malone, professor of music, and Kathy Vail, associate professor of music.

Five William Carey University faculty members were recently selected to exhibit their artwork in the Mississippi Art Faculty Juried Exhibition hosted by the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel April 10 – June 27.

Dr. Robert Bateman, Professor of Biochemistry for the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM), received The Dudley F. Peeler Outstanding Contributions to the Mississippi Academy of Sciences Award (the Peeler Award) at the Mississippi Academy of Sciences (MAS) 76th annual meeting at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center February 23-24.

Head Coach Steve Knight will lead the William Carey University men’s basketball team to the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) West Division Tournament at the Darlington School in Rome, Ga., on Wednesday, February 29, as they play Emmanuel College for the first game of the tournament.

Head Coach Tracy English will lead the William Carey University women’s basketball team to the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) West Division Tournament at The Forum in Rome, Ga., on Wednesday, February 29, as they play Southern Wesleyan University for their first game of the tournament. The Lady Crusaders went 13-13 in the regular season and 9-9 in SSAC post-season games. WCU defeated Southern Wesleyan 79-59 in December.

William Carey University’s School of Education will host the seventh annual Young Authors Celebration (YAC) on Friday, March 2. First to eighth graders from area schools are invited with their teachers and parents to attend this program. This year, over 600 students from nine schools are participating in YAC.

The 6th Annual Southern Strings Dulcimer Festival and the 1st Annual Deep South Dulcimer Competition were held in the Thomas Fine Arts Center at William Carey University February 23-25. Guest dulcimer instructors performed a free concert on February 25 before the evening competition.

William Carey University’s Speech and Debate Team won second place overall at the 2012 Mardi Gras Alumni Classic Tournament held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., February 24-26. In March the team will compete in the Pi Kappa Delta National Speech and Debate Tournament in Kansas City. Last year, the team won second place overall at Nationals.

William Carey University will host a concert featuring the Baddour Center’s nationally recognized choir, The Miracles, on Thursday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The Baddour Center is a unique community in Senatobia where nearly 200 adults with intellectual disabilities live with their peers in group homes or shared apartments. Residents audition to be one of the 24 members of The Miracles, who travel around country and perform approximately 90 concerts a year. The group has been honored with invitations to perform at such venues as the John F.

Dr. Jim Futral, executive director-treasurer of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, was the guest speaker for William Carey University’s chapel on February 22 in Smith Auditorium. Accompanying Dr. Futral was Slater Murphy, a Carey alumnus and director of church music for the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board. Murphy served as guest music leader. The Carey Chorale performed prior to Dr. Futral’s message.

The William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) has established a partnership with Forrest General Hospital, enabling third-year medical students to perform their rotations at the hospital. To show WCU’s appreciation, Dr. Darrell Lovins, dean of the WCUCOM, and Dr. Tommy King, president of WCU, presented a plaque to Evan Dillard, president and CEO of Forrest General, on February 21. The WCUCOM has 603 preceptors from Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Florida who have agreed to host the third year students for their clinical rotations.
