Hattiesburg, Miss., February 22, 2013 - Ashlee Arnau of Hattiesburg, a cheerleader and soccer player at William Carey University, nailed the half-court shot/ soccer style flip throw in at halftime of the WCU’s men’s basketball final home game against SSAC rival Auburn-Montgomery. Ashlee has been trying to sink the amazing half-court shot at every home game since Christmas, and she finally sank the shot during her last chance of the season.

Hattiesburg, Miss., February 21, 2013 - William Carey University held a symposium for high school students interested in health care careers on February 20. Representatives from Jones County Junior College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Pearl River Community College, University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC), The University of Southern Mississippi, WCU, and WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) were present and led breakout sessions to present information about the programs they offer.

Hattiesburg, Miss., February 21, 2013 - Dr. Paul Cotten, professor of psychology at William Carey University, will present a lecture titled, “Mental Health Services:  From Institutional to Deinstitutional” on Thursday, February 28, from 3- 4 p.m. in the Lucile Parker Gallery at WCU. This lecture in one in the WCU’s University Lecture Series.

Hattiesburg, Miss., February 19, 2013 - Carey students: Have you considered studying Spanish in Spain? William Carey University has a study-abroad program in Seville, Spain, with many options. The directors of the WCU study-abroad center, Dr. Doug Inglis and Donna Wright, will be on campus for a general meeting at 10 a.m. on February 21 in Tatum Court Room 301, and will be available for individual appointments afterwards. Parents are welcome as well.

Hattiesburg, Miss., February 14, 2013 - William Carey University hosted the Fourth Annual High School Art Competition in the Lucile Parker Gallery on February 9. The exhibition gave area high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to showcase their talents and compete for scholarships. Forty-one students from the following high schools participated in the competition: Christian Home Educators of Hattiesburg, Northeast Jones High School, South Jones High School and West Jones High School. Tommie Rogers, registrar for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, judged the competition.

Hattiesburg, Miss., January 29, 2013 - Josh Fortenberry, Assistant District Attorney for Forrest and Perry Counties, spoke about the dangers and impact of driving under the influence of alcohol to three of Dr. Benjamin Waddle’s health classes at William Carey University January 24-25. Fortenberry and District Attorney Patricia Burchell firmly believe that knowledge about the law and consequences of driving under the influence is one of the best preventative measures available.

 Hattiesburg, Miss., January 29, 2013 - The William Carey University Winters School of Music, in collaboration with the choirs and orchestras from First Baptist Church of McComb and Midway Baptist Church, will present a concert titled “Declare His Glory” on Monday, February 11 at 7 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The worship celebration will feature 110 singers with 60 in the orchestra.  The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.

Hattiesburg, Miss., January 25 - Cheryl Maqueda, assistant professor of Spanish at William Carey University, was recently honored as the Mississippi Foreign Language Association (MFLA) Teacher of Excellence. She was also re-elected as president of the Mississippi chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) in November.

Hattiesburg, Miss., January 25, 2013 - Dr. Clarke Millette, professor of anatomy at William Carey University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM), has been selected to serve as a grant application reviewer for the Patient Center Oriented Research Initiative (PCORI) Program. PCORI is a national program that was established by the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to fund major efforts intended to improve the American health care system. The program is governed by a 21-member Board of Governors and a 17-member Methodology Committee, which are appointed by the U.S.

Hattiesburg, Miss., January 23, 2013 - William Carey University will host the 4th Annual Hoops for Habitat featuring the Harlem Wizards on Friday, February 8 in the WCU gymnasium. The Harlem Wizards, a professional performance basketball team, will square off against the Habitat Hoopsters, a team including volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, The Arc, the Boys & Girls Club, The Children’s Center, The DuBard School, and Homes of Hope. All proceeds will go towards Habitat for Humanity’s spring and summer projects.
