William Carey University inducted 11 students into the Alpha Gamma Gamma chapter of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society during a ceremony on April 12 in the Student Conference Center. The inductees are Raechel Abney of Diamondhead, Ticochie Groves of Magee, Sara Jolley of Hattiesburg, Abby Magee of Columbia, Cody Patrick of Laurel, Joshua Caleb Pitts of Ellisville, Ian Pittman of Columbia, McKenzie Rigney of Picayune, Olivia Russell of McComb, Liberty Sites of Crestview, Florida, and Kayla Wagner of Leakesville.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine will host a viewing of the documentary “Among the Discarded” on Thursday, April 27 at 6 p.m. in Room 124 of Asbury Hall at The University of Southern Mississippi.

William Carey University will host a research symposium on Friday, April 21 showcasing the work of students in the Master of Biomedical Sciences program and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.  The symposium will be held from noon to 3:30 p.m. in the Student Conference Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The William Carey University Winters School of Music and Ministry will host the fifth annual “My First String Camp” from June 5-9 at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg. The camp is being held off-campus this year due to the tornado damage on the WCU campus.

Dr. Lee Valentine received the Master Preceptor Award from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians as the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine nominee. 
“Dr. Valentine’s commitment to medical education is outstanding,” said Dr. Jim Turner, WCUCOM dean. In addition to years of service as a preceptor, he also served as the founding chair of family medicine at WCUCOM and is the founding program director for the EC Health Net Family Medicine Residency in Meridian, Mississippi.

The William Carey University bands will present a Pops Concert at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23 at Main Street Baptist Church in Hattiesburg. The concert will feature great band favorites including marches, patriotic selections, spirituals, movie titles and more. Free admission and a picnic will follow the performance.

YourLocalSecurity ranked William Carey University as the safest campus in Mississippi in its “Safest College Campus by State” report released April 4. 
This is the second #1 safest campus ranking for Carey. In 2016, ranked Carey as the safest college in Mississippi. The university provides 24/7 security and quick responses to emergencies. The SaderWatch notification system keeps students prepared and safe. “The Housing Office staff and Resident Assistants are trained in how to respond to different types of emergencies and student safety is a priority for all university employees,” said WCU President Tommy King.

The William Carey University Art Department will present the Senior Show and Student Show April 20-26 at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center, located at 723 Main Street in downtown Hattiesburg. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held Thursday, April 20 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Seniors exhibiting are Donnia Adams, Rachel Hinton, Cara Larsen, and Laken Britt.

William Carey University faculty member Dr. Judy Prehn received the “Best Poster Award” at the 10th Annual World Conference on Pediatrics, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Nutrition held March 23-25, 2017 in Orlando, Florida. The poster subject was “decreasing sound and vibration during ground transport of infants with very low birth weight.” Dr. Prehn is an associate professor of physical therapy and clinical education director.

The William Carey University School of Education is now accepting applications for the next class of students enrolling in the Educational Leadership program. Students completing the program may earn a Master of Education or an Education Specialist degree.

William Carey University inducted five members into the alumni Hall of Fame during the annual awards dinner March 31 at Southern Oaks House and Gardens. The inductees are Larry Harrington, Ron Herrod, Victor Mariduena, Debra Owens Mercer, and Matthew Olson, recipient of the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award.

William Carey University  inducted eight former students-athletes into the Sports Hall of Fame during the Seventh Annual Sports Hall of Fame ceremony at Southern Oaks House and Gardens on April 1. During the evening WCU also recognized John Clearman with the Legacy Award for his support of WCU athletics.

William Carey University alumni and guests are invited to attend the 2017 homecoming festivities on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1.
“In spite of the overwhelming damage to the campus, Carey is moving forward. We didn’t miss a beat with classes, and we won’t with Homecoming, either,” said Pam Shearer, director of alumni relations. “With creative planning and the support of our terrific alumni, we will have a great Homecoming weekend.”
