Hattiesburg, Miss., August 2, 2012 - The William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) welcomes its new class with an opening ceremony on Wednesday, August 1, followed by a week of orientation activities. The 108- member class includes 67 men and 41 women, the majority of whom are from or have ties to the Gulf-South U.S.

Nathan Barber, a 1994 graduate of William Carey University and the head of upper school at Second Baptist School in Houston, Texas, recently published Resurrecting Lazarus, Texas, which is his thirteenth book.

The book tells the story of a young coach who takes over a struggling high school girls’ basketball team in a West Texas town where football is the only sport that matters. Halfway through the season, tragedy strikes and leaves the team and community fighting for a way to bring life back to their town.

If you had asked William Carey University alumna Ame Karoly two years ago what she would be doing after graduation she never would have dreamed she would be living in China. However, Karoly currently works at Linyi Normal University in Linyi, China, full-time as a foreign communications assistant in the international office and part-time as a conversational English teacher.

Hattiesburg, Miss., July 27, 2012 - William Carey University will hold orientation for all new students, including both freshmen and transfer students, on Friday, August 24 in Clinton Gymnasium on the Hattiesburg campus.

            Beginning at 8 a.m., residential students will have an opportunity to move into their assigned dormitories and new students will be able to complete registration processes with administrative offices. Orientation registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and will continue until noon.

William Carey University student Brittney LeighAnn Saulters competed as Covington County’s Miss Hospitality in the 2012 Mississippi Miss Hospitality pageant held at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Hattiesburg July 27-28. Saulters, a graduate of Seminary High School, is a freshman elementary education major at Carey.

William Carey University will hold the annual Scholarship Dinner featuring keynote speaker Gov. Phil Bryant at Southern Oaks House and Gardens on Tuesday, August 21. The evening will consist of a VIP reception and a dinner with musical entertainment and  an address by Gov. Bryant. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and the dinner at 7 p.m. A special scholarship will be established in honor of Gov. Bryant. Hattiesburg, Miss., July 5, 2012 - William Carey University’s Carey Dinner Theatre (CDT) will present the folk musical “Sing Out Sweet Land!” July 10 -21.  Performances are in the Joe and Virginia Tatum Theatre on the Hattiesburg campus of WCU.

Hattiesburg, Miss., July 5, 2012 - William Carey University hosted the Mississippi Baptist Convention HeartSong Camp June 26-30. Over 200 7th-12th graders attended the youth music and worship arts camp that is designed to assist them with discovering how to use their musical and artistic talents in worship and ministry. The camp includes a talent show, creative worship services, combined voice rehearsals, and workshops on voice, band, keyboard, guitar, art, banner making, drama, interpretive movement, and music reading.

Hattiesburg, Miss., July 5, 2012 - William Carey University president Dr. Tommy King has been elected to represent the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) on the Council of Presidents of the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Dr. King will serve a three-year term and will represent the interests of the largest of the 24 conferences that make up NAIA. The SSAC includes 15 schools in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

Students in William Carey University’s summer community nursing course held a Health Fair from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on June 21 in the Student Conference Center. The health fair included booths with information on breast cancer awareness, diabetic education, hypertension, nutrition, smoking cessation, and stress reduction. Tests were conducted on blood glucose and blood pressure, as well. Twenty-three nursing students participated in the planning and implementation of the health fair.

The William Carey University office of admissions will host Super Saturday for new students, both incoming freshmen and transfers, on July 14, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Super Saturday gives students and their parents a glimpse into university life and offers information on admissions, financial aid, housing and student life.
