The William Carey University School of Education has received national recognition for the Master of Education in educational leadership degree from the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC), a specialized professional association partnered with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

More than 450 William Carey University students received degrees during the largest August commencement in the university’s history on Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8 in Smith Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

William Carey University will hold General Registration Day for the fall term at both the Hattiesburg campus and the Tradition campus in Biloxi on Wednesday, August 19.
Admissions personnel will be available from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Hattiesburg campus and from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Tradition campus.

Steve Knight, athletic director and head coach of men’s basketball at William Carey University, was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame during the 2015 induction ceremony at the Capital City Convention Center in Jackson on August 1.

The William Carey University Lucile Parker Gallery will present “Spiritus Invictus: A Journey of Belief,” an exhibit of work by Rick Wilemon of Hattiesburg, from August 18-27. A reception for the exhibit will be held from 4:30 until 6 p.m. on August 25.
Wilemon, a 2015 graduate from Carey’s art department, said the exhibit “…is a collection of moments and experiences captured on paper, canvas and in transformed, everyday objects” and is also an expression of his Christian beliefs.

The fall term for the William Carey University Suzuki Institute, which offers violin, viola and cello lessons for children ages 4 and up, will begin on August 17.
The term will last 12 weeks and will incorporate private lessons, group classes, recitals and parent-teacher conferences. Classes are offered in varying skill levels. The institute’s curriculum is based on the teaching philosophy of Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki, who believed “musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability that can be developed.”

William Carey University will hold commencement ceremonies on Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8 in Smith Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.
The Friday ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. for doctoral candidates from the School of Education and the Fail School of Nursing as well as Specialist in Education candidates from both the Hattiesburg and Tradition campuses. The speaker will be Dr. Chuck Benigno, superintendent of the Laurel School District.

An essay by Dr. Lorie Watkins, an associate professor of language and literature at William Carey University, has been published in “Faulkner’s Geographies,” a book exploring fictional locations created by Mississippi author and Nobel Prize laureate William Faulkner.

William Carey University hosted a regional workshop for the Mississippi Foreign Language Association at the Hattiesburg campus on July 24.
The workshop, now in its fourth year at Carey, is held for teachers to share experiences they have in their respective classrooms and to also learn new ways of instructing their students.
