WCU to Host Exhibit by Artist Robert Long

Hattiesburg, MS, January 17, 2012 – William Carey University will host a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibit “Robert Long: Works in Clay” by artist Robert Long on Thursday, January 19, from 5-6 p.m. in the Lucile Parker Gallery. The exhibit will be on display through January 31 and is open to the public, free admission.

Long, who has served as head of the ceramic arts program at Mississippi State University since 1990, has had his work featured in numerous one-person and group exhibitions throughout the US and abroad. Recently, his work has been on exhibition on numerous sites including the Market House Craft Center in East Petersburg, Pa.; Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif.; the Baltimore Clayworks in Baltimore, Md.; the Clay Studio of Missoula Gallery in Missoula, Mont.; the Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago Ill.; and in 2007, even in a solo exhibition at the Sekitei Gallery in Hiroshima, Japan.

On his work and working with clay in general, Long has said, “My thoughts and concerns lie in the subtle physical forces required for manipulating and forming this soft malleable material, capturing in the skin-like wall of the form a sense of origin, movement, and life.”
Long received his bachelor’s in art from the University of California in Sacramento before earning his MFA in Ceramics at Clemson University. Articles about his work have appeared in Ceramics Monthly, in the Mississippi State Magazine Alumnus, in the book “Wood-Firing: Journeys and Techniques: A Collection of Articles from Ceramics Monthly,” which features one of his pieces on the cover, and more recently, in the book “500 Plates, Platters and Chargers,” which features a piece by Long entitled, ”Platter with Cut Rim.”

The public is invited to attend the exhibit.  Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 1-4 p.m. or by appointment, (601) 318-6528.
